For this tutorial we were to create a leaf using a realistic material, with mapping techniques. An already made 2d photo of a leaf was given to us to edit in photoshop and to create a black and white silhouette of the leaf.
In 3ds max a plane was created for which the leaf would be displayed on. The material was then to be prepared using the material editor and selecting the bitmap of our original leaf. Next was to go to the maps tab and click none in the opacity box. This time we would upload the black and white image of the leaf. Whilst in map select the box next to bump and reload the original image and increase the amount.
This material was then applied to the plane and we have a realistic looking leaf that is 2d. To give it some 3d dimension we go to edit poly and soft selection and choose vertexs that we wish to move and help curl a leaf. My rendered leaf is shown below.
